Club History 2 of 3

2. A History of Hockey in Wrexham

When Monsanto Hockey Club lost its much valued financial support from the Monsanto Chemical Company and with the expansion of N.E.W.I. (Glyndwr University) involving the provision of a sand based astro turf pitch, talks took place between Monsanto Men’s Hockey Club and Wrexham Glyndŵr Hockey Club, with regard to a merger. The Monsanto Ladies preferred to remain independent and finally changed their name to Hope Ladies H.C.

In 2000, Monsanto Hockey Club and Wrexham Glyndŵr Hockey Club merged to become Plas Coch Hockey Club

The Men’s section of Monsanto brought their four teams into the new Plas Coch Club with the Wrexham Men’s side and Wrexham Ladies two sides.

The Plas Coch Men’s 1st X1 played in the European Cup Winners Cup in their first season, this being hosted by the Club and the team won the bronze medal. In their third season they reached the Welsh Cup Final against Newport and were winning 3-2 with 29 seconds to go when the opposition levelled the game and Plas Coch finally lost of flicks.

The name never reflected the area of which the two clubs originated and it was decided in 2003 to reform Wrexham Glyndŵr Hockey Club
