M1s 2 - 1 Oxton 4
For our 13th league game of the season we travelled to Oxton. This hasn't been our favourite place to visit in the last couple of seasons collecting a total of zero points over that period.
We went into the game though with a lot of confidence after two convincing wins on the bounce since Christmas.
From the off, Oxton pressed and pressured us into losing the ball, giving it away in key places all over the pitch. This however didn't materialise into anything of substance due to our amazing defence - Andy little, Gareth Silks and captain fantastic Tom Chisz.
As the first half went on, we grew into the game and although this was stalled a little due to an unfortunate green card for Matthew Whelan, we did start to get some success on the right hand side and after some great play from Dan Thomas and Gareth Roberts, they were able to set Harry Tourret free to score the opening goal. 1-0 Wrexham. The half ended with a couple of golden chance, none of which we were able to take.
Into the second half Oxton came out rejuvenated, and through a short corner were able to draw level early in the second half. Game was now on, Wrexham stepped up and started to play some nice hockey, and unlucky again not to retake the lead after a delicious reverse hit from Tourret grazed the cross bar. The winning goal came half way through the second half, a short corner, drag flicked by Nathan Samuels, saved by the keeper and out of nowhere like a ninja in the night, Tom Chisz dives and reverse hits the ball past the keeper 2-1 Wrexham.
The game ended with us under a lot of pressure, first Nathan Samuel's saw green and then Gareth Roberts followed soon (very unlucky decision). Once they came back on, Matthew Whelan saw yellow soon after, a coming together with an Oxton player. The ref wanted more and wasn’t having it.
Well played Oxton for a hard fought game, glad though to come away with 3 points and now looking forward to welcoming Chester next Saturday
