Tough hard fought game
W2s 1 - 2 Rhyl & District 1
Wrexham ladies 2nd's annual trip to Rhyl was filled with trepidation as ever, a hangover from previous heavy defeats at the hands of their hosts.All credit to the visitors today,they made a lively start,taking Rhyl by surprise for the opening period and putting the Black's under some pressure.
Rhyl soon found their composure and a quick counterattack in 7th minute saw Leila leaping into action with a great kick and clearance.The young keeper again saving the day in the 11th minute after a heart stopping 3 on 1 scenario in the Wrexham D but Laila bravely stood her ground and managed to kick away the Rhyl attempt at goal.Only a couple of minutes later,the busy Wrexham keeper again in the fray,diving agily to the right to stop the ball on the line with her stick before being overwhelmed by the advancing forwards to break the deadlock.1-0
With the 1st half drawing to a tiring close, the 33rd minute witnessed a precise and pacy hit out from defence found Poppy on the left who controlled it well and moved it on to young Bethan who had found a great position before sending Georgia into the Rhyl D with a wonderfully paced pass,Georgia cracked a shot at goal ,only to be thwarted by the post but thankfully for Wrexham, Mia was like lightning,responding to the rebound 1st and lifted the ball beautifully past the floundering keeper.1-1
The 2nd half kicked off in the same vain,some passages of lovely Wrexham midfield and forward play,coupled with tenacious Wrexham defending certainly had Rhyl rattled.The home team had a player carded but unfortunately Wrexham weren't able to capitalise on their advantage.
The 45th minute saw Rhyl take the lead after an impressive attack down the right,culminating in a fierce close range shot at Laila leaving her little chance of a stop.2-1
Wrexham worked hard to the final whistle,pushing hard for an equaliser, a fantastic combination between Phoebe,Beth and Gemma P on the right unlucky not level up.
Accurate passing from Grita finding Poppy splitting the Rhyl defence wide-open with a quick pass to the thundering Georgia who found herself briefly on a thrilling 1:1 with the home team's keeper before being enveloped by the charging Rhyl defence and was unable to send a shot away.
After last week's disappointing result, Wrexham fought back courageously today and showed great tenacity.
