This is from This week
Chester 4 2-2 M1s
Away day to local rivals Chester and a strong team to start with. Wrexham were the ones on the front foot with some great pressure on Chester’s back line and an unusual sight to see Matt Whelan up top for the Whites. The half was a cagey affair with both teams seemingly not finding the last pass. Chester midway through the half got a couple of lucky short corner calls both of which Oscar managed to save (with his knees. Ouch!) but the second corner rebounded and they managed to slip it through his legs.
Wrexham went up the other way with some neat 1-2 play from Nathan Samuels and Whelan with a disguise pass that almost made it to Jonny in the middle. But that pressure then made Chester pay. Lack of concentration let Dan Thomas play a ball to the baseline for Samuels to slink past their left back and find Jonny Miller in the middle for a cool finish. Tempers started to flare with some decisions not going Wrexhams way but, the half managed to end 1-1.
The local rivalry was on full show for the second half. A green shown to Matt Stephens for consecutive fouls. Chester started to dominate and picked up a few more short corners, their only way through the Wrexham defence. A 1-2 into the penalty spot saw the home team take the lead again.
Wrexham were not done. A fantastic run from Samuels found Miller again who reversed his shot, looping over the keeper, only for a Chester defender to knee the ball out. On the way out Rich Read nailed a shot into the goal. But wait! Whistle had gone? Did he? Flick given. On consultation on the decision, Whelan got a yellow card...Up stepped Samuels with all the pressure on his mullet. Keeper went right, Samuels stroked it left. 2-2. But 10 men down. Some very heroic defending from the likes of Captain Tom Czimadia, Damon Smith and Matt Stephens kept Chester at bay. Sam McCulloch put a perfect ball through to Will Harris but couldn’t quite keep control. Wrexham made a few dangerous counters but still it stayed 2-2. Great display, could have gone either way!
Motm: Jonny Miller. Steller display up the left and up top. Engine!
Dotd: Scoop. Harsh yellow card cost him!
