M1s 3-4 Chester 4
The day didn’t start excellent as the rearranged game in Chester loomed. Wrexham were down to a bare 11 due to a broken down car and other issues. Wrex however, did pen in Chester 4s for the first 15 mins. Chester on the breakaway, passed through the press and their striker did well to hold off the advances of Tom Czismadea and played a lovely ball to their midfielder to hit into an empty net. Wrexham was undeterred and went again. This time Chester Goalkeeper made a lovely save down to the right from a Nath Samuels short corner. Chester mainly sent their passes down to their left from two quality youngsters who tormented the defence. They led the defence to overload on Wrexhams right and a clever ball back to their midfielder who finished well from the top of the D. Downhearted, Wrexham heads were down and from a miscontrol, Chester pounced and won a short corner. A few bobbles and around the D it nicely fell to their left back who swept it past Olly Sowter smartly, no chance of saving that one! Sowter made some great saves to keep it to 3.
Wrexham had it all to do 3-0 down. A very unnatural position they found themselves in. Matt Stephens got himself to the game and Matt Whelan rushed from work to play the second half. Work rate, and heart were needed to get back into it. Wrex also needed to finish their chances. Step up Iwan Thomas. Chester seemed to relax on the ball and Wrex forced them into mistake after mistake. The midfield picked up a loose ball and played Thomas into space, dribbling past their defender and finished smartly under the keeper. Dan Thomas picked up the ball and drove down the right wing. From the sideline, the ball was passed into Matt Whelan who turned on a sixpence and hit a ball flicked up off the stick of a defender and looped into a dangerous area Iwan Thomas smashed it like a baseball into the roof of the net. BOSH. Wrex tails were up. From a short corner, Wrex found some space and Iwan Thomas for the hat trick smacked one home. All level, Wrex then had a few decisions against them. Matt Stephens expertly defended the corner, played it out to the left back and got called by the umpire. Green, then yellow. As the Wrex players were baffled they switched off and left 5 Chester players free in the middle. Any one of them could have stuck it in. 4-3 to the home team. Wrex, tried to claw it back, but with no energy in the tank, they flattened to a defeat. Wrex now have the title out of their hands.
Motm: Olly Sowter: particular save from a 3 v 1 to keep them to a 3 goal deficit kept Wrex in it to the end.
Dotd: Matt Stephens: Faulty car made him late, then a (harsh) card for good measure just before a Chester scored.
