M1s 5-3 Birkenhead 1
Wrexham men’s 1st look to bounce back after two losses with a home game against Birkenhead.
Birkenhead started strong and pinned Wrexham back in the early stages; however, on the counter-attack Wrexham have the speed and technical ability to score against anyone, and this was the case, with Iwan Thomas scoring Wrexham’s first goal.
The second came soon after: a long aerial from starboy Matt Stephens put Iwan Thomas through 1 on 1 and he was able to round the keeper and put Wrexham 2–0 up.
Birkenhead spent the next 10 minutes on top, with multiple short corners and good play, all of which Wrexham’s goalkeeper Olly Sowtor stood tall and made some fantastic saves.
During this period, Matthew Whelan received a yellow card for offensive language towards an opposing player.
When Matthew Whelan came back on the pitch, he was able to turn the ball over high up the pitch and fed the ball into Iwan Thomas to bag a first-half hat-trick.
The first half finished with a penalty flick for Birkenhead, which Olly Sowtor once again stood tall and made an incredible save.
The second half was very even for the first 15 mins, Dan Thomas picking up a green card during this period.
Wrexham scored a fourth from a short corner which was well saved, but Tom Chisz was there to slam the ball home.
This was followed by a 5th goal: good work by Matthew Whelan to beat two Birkenhead players and win a short corner, which was then converted by Matthew Whelan.
The game finished with Birkenhead on top, scoring 3 late goals, all of which should have been avoided, but tired legs played a part. Wrexham win 5–3.
MOTM: Olly Sowter for some incredible saves and a PF stop. Iwan Thomas for a hattrick
Next up is St Helens away on 31 October.
