W2s 1-2 Bangor 1
A sunny and warm Wrexham day welcomed league newcomers Bangor University to take on Wrexham glyndwr ladies 2nd team. Hopes were high among the home team as Bangor had travelled without a goalkeeper, whilst the home team were lucky enough to have 2!
The Black and Reds started strongly and with belief. Fran linking up quickly with Mia on the right who carried the ball purposefully to the attacking 25yds before running into trouble. Shortly after, Mia again fired a lovely cross into the 'D' finding Ffi, who struck 1st time only to watch it agonisingly fly across the front of the visitors unguarded goal. Tenacious work from Sophie saw her awarded a short corner in the 7th minute. Gemma B injected to Gemma P who cracked the ball back onto the 'D' but again no Wrexham sticks able to make contact. The home team continued to dominate, distributing well from defence, Fran again this time finding Sophie who beautifully dodged a Bangor defender only to run into another. Good work from the middle of the field,Abbie and Ffi probing repeatedly to tease out Wrexham's 1st goal but the tide was turning. Bangor started to exert more authority on the game and the Blacks were on the rack from the 15th minute,Ruby swung into action with her 1st touch of the ball ,clearing her lines with a deft right foot kick out of defence. Bethan demonstrated lovely composure , carrying the ball at speed out of Wrexham's half to provide some respite, linking in with Sophie but the attack breaking down in the visitor's 25.
The deadlock was broken in the 17 minute,Bangor squeezing a shot into the right hand corner. 0-1.
A 2nd looked inevitable Shortly later but a well timed goal line clearance from Anna in the 20th minute left Bangor frustrated, but pushing hard. The 30th minute saw Bangor awarded a short corner which they executed cleanly,0-2.
Sensing the closing of the 1st half,Wrexham found their stride again, a searching run from Bethan gained good ground, a fierce ball into the 'D' from Abbie was offered but the home team unable to nick it goal bound.A 2nd opportunity followed quickly, when Ffi struck into the D,Mia controlled wonderfully but was closed down too quickly to get a shot away.
The dying minute of the 1st half witnessed a Wrexham short corner ,Gemma B to the tireless captain, with a well weighted pass to Gemma P to her right who ruthlessly pushed the ball into the back of the Bangor net.1-2
The 2nd half resumed with Bangor looking the more dangerous team.Ruby taking a break for Laila to enter the fray and busy she was from the outset.Diving to her right amid an onslaught of Bangor forwards, managing a merest deflection with stick across the goalface to keep Wrexham with only a 1 goal deficit.
Another short corner to the visitors with 10mins gone saw the Wrexham keeper smother the ball bravely, thwarting the attack. Skipper Ffi seemingly inspired by the keeper's mobility, pulled off 2 daring diving clearances in Wrexham's danger area with 17 mins to go.Mia again receiving in the D,turned her defender skillfully ,only for her shot to be saved on the line by a defender.
Laila and the busy defence managing to absorb Bangor's advances right up until the final whistle. A difficult game despite Bangor being without a keeper,Wrexham struggled to gain advantage in the Bangor 25 but they commendably stuck to their task to the final whistle.
Great effort by all.
