Eirias Dev 1-0 W2s
Early 10am pushback in Colwyn Bay for our young ladies against an Eirias Development team. Wrexham welcomed back Beth Hughes and Poppy Polden after illness however at the same time losing Abi at the eleventh hour and Gemma B, managing instead of playing. Rachel and Zoe showed club solidarity but joining from the Ladies 1s.

A strong start from Eirias gaining a short corner within the first few minutes but the Wrexham defence preventing an early goal. Wrexham had their chances within the first 20 minutes. Beth Hughes creating attacking runs up the pitch, on occasion entering the D to find a clear shot or pass to score. Wrexham’s first short corner came during this time but was directed straight at the Eirias goalkeeper and was cleared away. Soon enough, the partnership of Ffion and Zoe were also providing Wrexham with more opportunities, but all sadly just on the wrong side of the posts. Another dynamic duo of Hattie and Bethan T working together showing their skills across the pitch. The rest of the first half continued to be evenly matched, play happening at both ends. Just before half time, Wrexham’s final chance came when Hattie drove the ball into the corner, turned past an Eirias player, finding Ffi near side of the goal; top of the D. Ffi took a shot but the ball ran across the goal and off the sideline. Eirias’ last chance of the half was a short corner which was stopped by the excellent defence team of the mighty Wrexham. 0-0 at half time.

The second half started as it did in the first. Wrexham managed to achieve two consecutive short corners but both were cleared. Sophie Forgrave and Poppy supporting in high attacking positions, making crucial passes, finding space and pressuring their defence. Both teams continued to attack and defend fiercely. One key moment came three quarters into the game when Laila had to make a full stretch dive across goal, the ball deflecting off her stick, away from goal. The game changer came only a few minutes later when Eirias scored through open play. With less than 10 minutes to go, the 10 Wrexham players with tired legs were determined not to give up. They fought on to the end with at least one more attacking opportunity but still managing to block any further Eirias chances. Final score 1-0. It was a score line that did not reflect the game but our ladies gave it their all (as they always do).
